The forecast for the weekend of 06/10 looked great, so we made plans to do a family fish trip taking my son, nephew and grandson out. I haven’t taken the boat out for over 5 months, as the weather has not been great and when I did go out with some friends in their boat the fishing was well below average.
We went out from Kawakawa Bay, headed over to the Coromandel harbour entrance and stopped at the 27m mark. It is not an area I usually fish, but will in the future as it is only a 15 minute run from the ramp.
The water temperature is still cold and still sitting below 15 deg, interestingly enough it is colder now than it was 2 months ago when it was up around the 15.5 deg.
We started fishing at a leisurely time of 8.30 and could have gotten our limit, of 28 snapper, in the first 90 minutes, but decided not to take anything less than 35cm, which was increased to 40cm as the fishing was so good.
Out of the 28 snapper we caught all were males except for 2 females which had a lot of roe. The biggest 2 fish were both just over 12 pounds which were despatched to the smoker very quickly that afternoon. We also landed 3 fat gurnard.
Bird work ups are now starting, so get out there when you can as there is plenty for everyone.
