Doug Gellert Former Dairy Farmer and Greenhouse Grower sadly passed away in March

Stalwart of Local Community
GELLERT, Douglas Bartram (Doug). Born January 09, 1937. Passed away suddenly after a short illness on the 11th of March 2024.
Doug was a local Karaka (South Auckland) stalwart and over his many decades farming in Karaka, dating back to the 1970’s, had major roles in local and national organisations including Federated Farmers.
Doug’s achievements were many and as long-term Chairman of the Karaka War Memorial Hall, he and others in the community were pivotal in its survival. As a long-term supporter of Karaka Rugby, he will be missed every Saturday on the balcony and in the clubrooms.
Greenhouses:
In the early 1990’s Doug with his son Steve, transitioned the then dairy farm to growing commercial tomato crops in greenhouses. In the mid 1990’s a large greenhouse expansion meant for a period the tomato growing operation was the largest in NZ. Gellert Nurseries is now one of the largest propagation nurseries in New Zealand.
Doug and wife Diane were an integral part of the greenhouse business from the beginning. Even until recent times, Doug would be regularly seen at the greenhouses, helping whenever required.
Personally, I worked for and alongside Doug (The Boss as I called him) for many years. He was a great teacher, mentor and friend and will be sadly missed but never forgotten. Thank you for all the good times we shared, the many stories and laughs along the way. Rest in peace Boss.
Marie and I would like to extend our deepest condolences to all the Gellert Family for your Loss.
