Field Trip to Gellert Nurseries
Young students from Karaka Primary School learning about Horticulture
Last week the year zero to year two students (5-7) from Karaka Primary School were taken on a field trip to Gellert Nurseries, in South Auckland. As well as the students over twenty parents attended. The kids were extremely attentive and inquisitive throughout the visit.
Owner and Managing Director Stephen Gellert personally gave a tour to the students. Steve showed them how planting can be done from tissue culture and how they can be propagated simply from leaf cuttings. The colours & size of the plants and the automatic technology was not lost on these incredibly young students who were full of intriguing questions.
It was a great learning experience for the children, hopefully the kids will take inspiration from it, and you never know there may be budding horticulturists amongst them.
Above – a short video of the overhead boom irrigation system demonstrated to the students.

The students got a close look

The children (and parents) particularly liked all the amazing colours in the Orchid house

All the students stuck to the paths and were very well behaved.
