From trial to scale: how Hollandia is advancing gerbera production with color-controlled Philips LED lighting

Building flexibility into the installation through dynamic intensity and spectral control

By testing first and scaling based on crop results, Hollandia Greenhouses has built a flexible lighting strategy that supports quality, winter production and vase life—while creating new opportunities to steer gerbera crops with dynamic light and spectrum. Based in Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Hollandia Greenhouses produces gerberas at scale, where consistent quality and crop timing are essential to maintaining reliable year-round production.

From trial to nearly nine hectares

Hollandia began its LED journey with Philips GreenPower LED toplighting compact in 2022. Rather than changing the full greenhouse at once, the team first tested the technology over several seasons and assessed its effect on the crop. The results gave the business confidence to take the next step. In 2025, Hollandia expanded with Philips GreenPower LED toplighting force in a two-channel configuration across nearly nine hectares of gerbera production, while retaining a hybrid combination of LED and high-pressure sodium lighting.

“After testing the LEDs for a couple of seasons, we saw better quality, higher winter production and improved vase life overall.” – Terry Pastorek, Operations Manager, Hollandia Greenhouses

Adding flexibility with dynamic light and spectrum

The new installation allows Hollandia to adjust light intensity dynamically in response to available sunlight. Its two-channel setup includes independently controllable far-red light, enabling the team to vary the spectral balance as it explores how light can influence plant response, support more uniform growth and contribute to consistent year-round crop timing. Philips GrowWise control brings intensity and spectrum together in one lighting strategy, helping the team manage light more precisely as production needs change.

Technology backed by ongoing support

“Part of our decision to go with the Philips brand is the support that we get from Signify. Any issues, they’re there to help us. They’re also introducing the newest technology and letting us know what is available to grow a better product.” — Terry Pastorek, Operations Manager, Hollandia Greenhouses

What other growers can learn from Hollandia

Building flexibility into the installation through dynamic intensity and spectral control also gives growers more options to respond to daylight conditions and changing crop needs. At the same time, the value of the system extends beyond the luminaires themselves: controls, crop knowledge and ongoing technical support are all important components of a successful long-term lighting strategy.

For Hollandia, the transition is not a single technology switch but a staged learning process. The combination of trial data, a hybrid installation, controllable light channels and GrowWise gives the team a platform to build on proven results while continuing to refine its gerbera production strategy.
