“With just a few clicks, we achieved approximately 2% more light on the crop”
Eindhoven, the Netherlands – Signify (Euronext: LIGHT), the world leader in lighting, is showcasing how growers can optimize energy use or make additional growth light available with Philips GrowWise smart spectrum. A new customer video features experiences from Botany Group and Wim Peters Kwekerijen, demonstrating how automated spectrum control can help growers get more value from their lighting installation without adding operational complexity.
GrowWise smart spectrum automatically optimizes the light spectra based on real-time sunlight irradiation. By continuously evaluating the contribution of natural sunlight, the system adjusts LED channels to either reduce energy consumption or provide additional growth light, while staying within the planned power budget or desired light output.
At Botany Group, cultivation manager Kris Welles evaluated how smart spectrum could reduce energy consumption in an all-electric cucumber greenhouse without compromising crop performance. By automatically responding to changing daylight conditions, the system replaces less energy-efficient light spectra with more efficient alternatives while maintaining crop growth and light output.

“What’s great about smart spectrum is that the system automatically responds to the amount of natural daylight, with PAR and FR light being evaluated separately,” said Kris Welles, Cultivation Manager at Botany Group. “As a result, less energy-efficient light spectra are replaced by more energy-efficient ones—without compromising light output or crop growth.”
The trial delivered the greatest savings during spring and autumn, when sunlight levels fluctuate throughout the day. The GrowWise smart spectrum dashboard also provided valuable insights into lighting performance and system interventions throughout the growing season.
At Wim Peters Kwekerijen, cultivation manager Joost van Asten explored how smart spectrum could contribute to a stronger tomato crop. By detecting when sufficient blue and green light is available from natural daylight, the system automatically reduces the white channel output and reallocates energy to additional red growth light.
“With just a few clicks, we achieved approximately 2% more light on the crop,” said Joost van Asten, Cultivation Manager at Wim Peters Kwekerijen. “We observed a stronger crop and more vigorous plant heads, while staying within our planned power budget.”
