Labour Saving Tip of the Week

Planting directly from the nursery trolleys to save on double handling

It does not matter what you are planting in your greenhouse, cucumbers, tomatoes, capsicums, eggplants, courgettes etc, it can be done much more efficiently if you plant directly from the common Danish Trolleys that the major nurseries deliver plants on. This is dependent on whether you have a pipe rail system between each row.

There are clear reasons why it is beneficial:

  1. Reduces double handling
  2. Saves time/efficiency
  3. Reduces stress on the plant

For cucumber growers the time from delivery of plants to planting is vitally important – I have observed plantings that started in the early morning but not finished until early in the afternoon, in the same house- the extra time and stress on the cucumber plants is noticeable. It causes long term issues, so the faster you plant the better.

It is not as essential to plant as fast as possible with other mainstream crops, but the labour efficiency alone is worth the investment into trolley ramps that can be attached to your harvesting trolleys. You do not even require grow gutters, personally I grew from the ground and found it sped up my planting immensely – what once took all day was cut in half.

Every bit of time you can save is vital – so plant from trolley ramps where possible.

Next issue we will look at tying up and why you should leave your stakes in.
