Metazet investigates chemical resistance of cultivation gutters: material choice crucial under stricter cleaning protocols
Due to stricter hygiene requirements in greenhouse horticulture, cultivation gutters are being cleaned more intensively than ever.
New research from Metazet shows that the lifespan of gutter systems strongly depends on the type of coating, the surface structure, and the use of cleaning agents. In particular, closed layers such as PVC laminate and polypropylene (Second Skin) offer far better protection against degradation compared to traditional open coatings.
Research into coatings and cleaning
Metazet examined the chemical resistance of different types of cultivation gutters. The study assessed factors such as cleaning agent concentration, exposure time, and rinsing methods. The results reveal that open structures like polyester and polyurethane are more susceptible to damage under intensive cleaning, whereas smooth, dense layers prove far more durable.
Practical reality in the sector
“The reality has changed: where mild cleaning used to be sufficient, growers now often work with powerful agents,” says Luke van Adrichem, CEO of Metazet. “We believe it is important to investigate this reality and share our knowledge, so growers can prevent damage and make more informed material choices.”
Recommendations for growers
Key recommendations from the study are:
- Always apply cleaning agents according to instructions and in the correct concentration.
- Limit exposure time and rinse thoroughly.
- Pay extra attention to coating damage, as this can form an entry point for degradation.
For situations where intensive cleaning is unavoidable, Metazet advises choosing materials with a closed structure. This significantly extends the durability of cultivation gutters.
Practical support
To support the sector, Metazet has made available a leaflet, a FAQ page, and the full test report. These resources provide growers with detailed insights into the research results and help them make well-informed decisions.
