Philips LED lighting enables precise winter growing at Truly Green Farms (Canada)

For Truly Green Farms, winter tomato production depends on having the right lighting system in place.

Located near Chatham, Ontario, the 90-acre operation completed the fourth and final phase of its greenhouse development in 2021, with winter growing as a clear priority. To support reliable year-round production, the team chose Philips LED toplighting compact. As Greg Devries, CEO and part owner of Truly Green Farms, explains, “We did our homework. We visited growers in Europe who were already using Philips LED lighting, and that gave us the confidence to partner with Philips.”

Built as a lit range, the new greenhouse section allows Truly Green Farms to produce through the winter months while balancing supplemental light with natural sunlight. For the team, the lighting decision was more than adding luminaires. “This wasn’t just installing lights—it impacts the entire crop,” says Devries. “Having the Signify team support us made all the difference.” LEDs also help the growers manage production without adding excess heat, giving them greater control over crop development and greenhouse climate.

That control is especially important in day-to-day crop steering. JosiahBarkhouse, Director of Operations, says, “What I like about the Philips LED toplighting compact is that we can manage temperature while steering the crop very precisely. The way the plants convert light into sugars is extremely efficient—we’re seeing strong results.” The LED system is part of a broader growing strategy that includes climate control, irrigation, and sustainability measures, with waste heat and CO₂ from neighboring Greenfield Global further supporting efficiency across the operation.

With Philips LED toplighting compact in place, Truly Green Farms continues to deliver high-quality tomatoes throughout the winter with greater control and consistency, backed by proven technology and a trusted partner. As Devries explains, “When it comes to Truly Green, we’re all about collaboration. We had a team from Signify that helped support us and led us to learn and grow together, to understand how we can maximize the impact of the lighting system.”
