Roam presentation on hygiene protocols for greenhouses and biosecurity, Pukekohe, New Zealand

Roam presentation on hygiene protocols for greenhouses and biosecurity, Pukekohe, New Zealand
Recently I attended a superb presentation by Ivan Casteels, Roam Technology discussing biosecurity, hygiene, and ToBRFV.

Even though this presentation is predominantly for greenhouse growers I highly recommend that all growers, indoor and outdoor, packhouses, government departments with a focus on biosecurity for horticulture and agriculture to read the attached presentation notes.

Summary of presentation:

  • Hygiene is a very important part in both propagation and cultivation (very often underestimated and looked at separately)
  • An incomplete company hygiene is pointless (often focus on only parts of complete hygiene protocol)
  • When a hygiene protocol is not present, you face a great risk for diseases in your plants and greenhouse.
  • Having the propagation done by a professional propagator (as they have protocols in place).
  • Propagators should work already under a hygiene protocol
  • Propagators should have the set-up to grow good developed, uniform and “clean” plants.
  • Everything that is not needed in the greenhouse: remove.
  • Everyone who doesn’t have to be in the greenhouse for a good reason: No access!!

Tomato brown rugose fruit virus detected in Victoria:  Concern for vulnerable New Zealand tomato growers
The spread of the virus from South Australia to Victoria in Australia highlights, what appears to be the near impossible task of eradicating the virus from a property once infected.  New Zealand growers have been communicating such concerns since the original outbreak in South Australia was confirmed to New Zealand officials in August 2024.

MPI – decision to temporarily suspend all Imported Australian fresh Tomatoes the correct one.
The decision to suspend all fresh tomato imports from Australia is a significant relief for New Zealand's tomato growers. Given the risk posed by Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV)
