Glasshouse Technician – Job Advertisement
Location: Tuakau, Waikato, New Zealand
Employment Type: Full-Time | Permanent
Days of work: Tuesday to Saturday
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Glasshouse Technician to join our technical team in Tuakau. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in commercial glasshouse vegetable production who is passionate about crop management, irrigation, fertigation, spraying, and plant health.
About the Role
The Glasshouse Technician plays a key role in the day-to-day monitoring and maintenance of our glasshouse crops. Responsibilities include irrigation and fertiliser preparation, pest and disease monitoring, crop spraying, crop registration, basic equipment maintenance, and responding to Priva climate and irrigation alarms. The position requires close communication with management, team leaders, and production staff to maintain high crop performance and quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare fertiliser feeds and acid solutions according to recipes and maintain accurate records.
- Spraying crops using spray units.
- Monitor irrigation performance, including EC, pH, drainage, water usage, and tank levels.
- Respond to Priva alarms and assist with climate and irrigation management.
- Scout for pests and diseases and assist with integrated pest management (IPM) programmes.
- Monitor crop growth, flowering, fruit set, and overall plant health.
- Release and monitor bumble bee hives for pollination.
- Carry out routine maintenance on irrigation, spray, and technical equipment.
- Maintain stock control of fertilisers, chemicals, and technical supplies.
- Assist with crop rotations, hygiene procedures, and greenhouse setup.
- Participate in weekend duty and after-hours callouts as required.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety, food safety, and environmental procedures.
Skills and Experience
- Experience in a commercial glasshouse or greenhouse environment.
- Knowledge of irrigation, fertigation, and climate control systems.
- Experience using Priva or similar climate computer systems is preferred.
- Understanding of pest and disease monitoring and crop protection.
- Good computer skills, including Excel and data recording.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
- Forklift licence, Growsafe, Certified Handler, or horticultural qualifications are advantageous.
