Current situation – detection in Victoria
Updated 16 May 2025:
Agriculture Victoria continues to respond to a detection of tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) at a tomato glasshouse facility in northern Victoria following confirmation of the virus on 14 January 2025. The virus was detected in tomato seedlings that were moved from South Australia in December 2024.
The current Response Plan focus is eradication and decontamination which aims to protect Australia’s $5.8 billion vegetable industry and the $2.8 billion plant nursery industry from the impacts of the virus. This plan is a nationally agreed approach with industry input.
On 11 May there was another detection of the virus in seedlings planted in a decontaminated glasshouse as a part of return to business aligned with the National ToBRFV Response Plan.
The source of the infection is under investigation. Given that the seedlings had only been on the property for a few days, it is unlikely that this new detection has originated from the Victorian property.
Agriculture Victoria is working closely with the affected business and other jurisdictions to manage the situation.
The property remains under quarantine to stop the virus from spreading. There is no evidence of ToBRFV in any other part of Victoria.
Following the new detection, the national Consultative Committee for Emergency Plant Pests will consider the information and the outcomes of surveillance and tracing at the source production nursery. This will inform next steps and a review of the National Response Plan.
The current National Response Plan will continue to be followed while investigations at the NSW production nursery are underway.
